...sillä Floridan appelsiinisato on jäämässä ainutlaatuisen pieneksi.
Tosi tanakkaa kamaa.

Fla. orange forecast lowest in 16 years
By TRAVIS REED, Associated Press Writer Thu Oct 12, 11:25 AM ET
ORLANDO, Fla. - Florida is expected to have its smallest orange crop in 16 years because of a winter cold snap and lingering hurricane stress, the federal government said Thursday.
The Department of Agriculture predicted 135 million boxes of oranges, down from an already-low 147.9 million boxes produced last year. Before two nasty hurricane seasons, the state was averaging about 220 million boxes, each weighing 90 pounds. Orange juice prices were already up about 9 percent over last year. If the prediction holds, the state would have its smallest harvest since 1990, when freak freezes crippled production. The Agriculture Department attributed this year's lower forecast to cold temperatures in mid-February that interrupted the bloom period and lingering stress from last year's Hurricane Wilma.
Besides the spate of hurricanes, three diseases that kill trees and damage fruit continue to spread, and droughts in the past year have further cut production. The small crop means growers could see their best returns in a decade or more, said Bob Norberg, director of research and operations at the Florida Department of Citrus.
Florida is second only to Brazil in global orange juice production, and puts out more than 90 percent of all juice consumed in the United States.
